Camping

--The choice of cantonment

You should abide on several important principles as the followings: the first is safety; the second is convenience; the third is comfort. The ideal encampment should be leeward, sunshine-frontage and should be built near water source. Do not choose the mountaintop or some open places, where the winds are always heavt. The valleys will gather the cool air and have more humidity. The mountainside can gather much rain but so wet. Under cliff you should consider safety and be aware of dropping stones or avalanche. If camping near the water source, you will be infested by mosquitoes or some animals drinking there. If camping near a river or a brook, your encampment should be a little higher than water in order that you will not be affected by the noise of flowing water and can be aware of the environment around you. Be careful of the unexpected rain and the reservoir in upriver. All of these will let river rise quickly and become a danger for you.

Finally, looking over whether there are some beehives or not. If camping at unfrequented places, you should avoid the path where animals go through to water source for drinking.

--Camping

Now you can camp in the places you have chosen. First, put up the public tents, such as cookroom, warehouse and water closet. Then put up each private tent. The water closet should be put up at leeward of encampment, up turn should be cookroom, warehouse and tents. Efficient time arrangement is very important. For example, while having built a cookroom, you can heat water; and while finishing building the whole encampment, you can drink and prepare a meal. To put up a tent, the opening of tent should be lee and face the sun. All tents should open on the same direction. The border and foursquare should be fixed and pushed down with big stones if possible. To dig a groove around each tent is to avoid dipping in rain.

--Sanitation of the encampment

Every member should keep the encampment sanitary. Most of disease is infected by water, so avoid water source's pollution is very important when you arrange your encampment. If water roots in a river or a brook, you'd better gather drinking water in head river, bathe or wash clothes in middle and clean other tools in downriver. Do not throw away living rubbish everywhere. You should collect them all together for burning or burying. The water closet and the places dealing with rubbish should be leeward and kept a distant away from encampment.

--Building a simple Toilet

Toilet should be put up leeward to the encampment, locating lower than living places and being far away from water source. Building a toilet only needs some simple materials, such as stones, branches, sailcloth and so on. Enclose all sides about 1.5 meters high and leave an opening. The opening should be leeward and opposite to the encampment. Digging a pit about half meters deep and the size is convenient for using. The bottom of the pit is put with stones and leaves. After each using, you should cover the pit with board to avoid the fly breeding. When you leave and finish the camping, you should bury the pit with soil and fire the woods that have been used or make signs to notice the following people.

--Encampment

Keep clean, dry and fresh air in tent. Do not step into tent with shoes abrasing the bottom of tent. Do not take the wet clothes into tent. You can air them using string tied with two sides of tent. If there is sunshine, you should air the sleeping bags. At night, you can light with candle, electric torch and headlight. Be careful of using fire and die all flames when sleeping. Food packs should be tied to avoid ants and other small animals. To enwrap the packs with the cover in order to keep from wet air. Before take up packs in the morning, you should shake off clothes and packs to drive away the small but presumable animals.
